SecondMuse champions and supports the growth of ecosystems by designing and leading programs that involve workshops, events, mentorship networks, curriculum, and other efforts to build and grow future economies. At the core of our community-sourced approach is a dedication to creating and fostering cohesive narratives and deep relationships throughout the ecosystem. We have organized innovation programs in over 100 countries and 250 cities, sourcing solutions from every corner of the world. Each has challenged our teams to develop targeted approaches to find, and then support visionary leaders with a diverse range of experiences, motivations and cultures. We invite you to help build with us; leverage our proven strategies to build strong communities and influence local, regional and global networks, and add your own contribution to our growing team and portfolio of programs.

Every year an estimated eight million tons of plastic enters the oceans. The Incubation Network (TIN) was established in Singapore by SecondMuse in partnership with The Circulate Initiative (TCI) to take up this challenge. The problem of ocean plastic pollution represents just a part of a broader crisis brought about by an intersecting set of issues: rapid urbanisation, changes in income and consumption, lack of investment, and ineffective regulation. In Asia, where the majority of ocean plastic originates, these issues are acute. To address them we need to think differently about cities, materials, businesses and economies. We need to harness innovation and leverage markets for transitions towards circularity.

The Opportunity

SecondMuse seeks a dynamic Thailand-based consultant to help set up a multi-year program that aims to increase innovation toward the reduction of ocean plastic. The consultant will be deeply connected to the Thai innovation ecosystem, having experience working as an investor with deal execution experience and relationships with start-ups business accelerators and incubators or other similar programs. Ideally, the consultant will also have experience connecting start-ups to government and the private sector actors.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, and independent but willing and able to work with geographically disparate teams and cultural backgrounds. Ideally, you are also passionate about the environment and excited by the challenge of supporting more circular societies. We are looking for a consultant based in Bangkok, and someone fluent in English and Thai. Initially, we are seeking to fill the role for 12 months, depending on experience and skills. However, this role has the huge potential to be extended beyond the first phase of the project into strategy implementation.

We are aware that our expectations for this role are high. So if you feel you meet most, but not all of the key competencies below, please don't let this stop you from applying. We are also open to hiring multiple people to fill the role, if a single consultant can't be found.

  • Lead in identifying, developing and screening new investment opportunities, including undertaking detailed business and financial due-diligence
  • Build a strong network in the waste management, recycling, entrepreneurial, non-profit, civil society, policy and finance communities
  • Connect and collaborate with entrepreneurs and various stakeholders in their ecosystems, such as banks or finance organizations, sector experts or policymakers
  • Proactively facilitate communication with key stakeholders and keep them engaged throughout the process
  • Work closely within a team, effectively coordinating and interacting with local partners (MNCs, businesses, non-profits and civil society
  • Anticipate and facilitate decision-making when necessary
  • Manage multiple subcontractors for project delivery

  • Experience in circular economies and ecosystem management
  • Investment experience in the venture capital ecosystem is essential
  • Prior entrepreneurial experience and exposure to market-based development is a plus
  • Proven track record of capacity-building across strategy, operations, business development and talent
  • Well versed in early stage business models and different entrepreneurial styles
  • Experience in portfolio management, management consulting or as an entrepreneur
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to formulate and communicate complex analysis in a clear and concise manner to a variety of stakeholders
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Understanding of waste management and circularity is a high desirable, but not essential
  • Deep practical understanding of doing business in Thailand
